|LAW 694 - Externship-Family Court|
Students spend seven hours per week working in White Plains Family Court under the supervision of experienced attorneys. Responsibilities include interviewing battered women; drafting petitions for orders of protection, support, and custody; and participating in the presentation of the ex parte hearing on the petition for the order of protection.
The weekly two-hour seminar provides education concerning the dynamics of domestic violence as well as relevant Family Court practice simulations and training, and, of course, an opportunity to consult on the cases as they develop. This externship will have a working relationship with Westchester-Putnam Legal Services, the Mental Health Association, and the domestic violence shelters in Westchester.
Permission of the professor is required, and Evidence is recommended but not essential.
