LAW 829C - Externship-Legal Services/Public Interest
The Legal Services/Public Interest/Health Law Externship has two components: 1) a weekly two-hour seminar; and 2) 12 hours per week of supervised fieldwork with a provider of legal services to low-income and otherwise disadvantaged people, a public interest legal organization, the legal department of a not-for-profit health care provider or a government agency. Students spend a day and a half, or three half-days, per week "in the field," at the placement office or in court. Students in this program have conducted administrative hearings and routine court appearances (answering calendar calls and the like), interviewed clients, investigated factual claims, and drafted affidavits, file memoranda, and briefs. Time is also required for maintaining work logs and weekly journals, for preparing seminar presentations and simulations, and for occasional individual tutorials with the professor. Fieldwork is supervised primarily by mentoring attorneys, with back-up from the professor. Some seminars are devoted to "case rounds" for mutual consultation. Some fieldwork is library research or other tasks that can be performed outside the placement office. Permission of the professor is required. Administrative Law is recommended. Introduction to Health Law I is required for Health Law placements.
