Course Description: This course explores a wide range of the best in children's literature, B-12, and focuses on the selection and evaluation of literature in the various literary genres of fiction and non-fiction for instructional, information, and recreational purposes. The course reviews current theories, research and issues in literature study including historical milestones in children's literature. Literary genres, elements, forms and structures are examined with an emphasis on the uses of children's literature in reading and writing instruction through literature-based literary lessons and thematic units of study, the development of critical thinking/reading skills, and motivational strategies that promote respect for cultural diversity through literature and develop life-long reading habits in children.
